In my writing over the last couple of week, I have talked a lot about skin pigmentation. Pigmentation is a problem for a lot of people and it is the time of year when we start to notice it. This is the time when we start to see small patches of colour developing on the skin, the exact colour will depend on our skin tone; for some people they can appear grey and on other skin tones they can appear light to very dark brown. When the sun and the light returns so too does any past or new skin pigmentation.
Pigmentation does not occur only if we sunbathe. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, which contains dangerous UV light, it can cause damage to our DNA. Our skin responds by trying to protect us from the harmful UV rays and produces a pigment called melanin. Melanin is what is responsible for skin colour and skin tone (more melanin means a person has darker skin). Melanin absorbs the harmful UV rays so they do less damage to our DNA. However, even though our skin works to protect us all the time, it can only do so much; unprotected and repeated sunlight, tanning and sunburn can cause pigmentation to develop and worst case scenario, melanoma, a potentially fatal skin cancer. This is the reason why I will SPF & Ultrasun every single day of the year!

The molecule size for serums are very small so I will apply my face serum first, allow to fully absorb and then apply my Ultrasun. Once my Ultrasun has been absorbed which is normally the time it takes me to make a cup of tea or coffee, I then continue with the rest of my skincare.
- For those of you like me that have other hand creams in your collection, I will always use Ultrasun Hand SPF 30 in the morning before I leave and throughout the day, I will use my L’Occitane hand cream. This way, I get the best of both worlds!
