My love for makeup has grown since becoming a Certified Makeup Artist but having healthy and hydrated skin comes first! The major sign of healthy and hydrated skin is a natural glow. Lack of sleep, stress, age, and even what we eat can have an effect on our complexion and skin radiance. Here are my top tips to support healthy and hydrated skin.

Top Tips to Support Healthy & Hydrated Skin

Cleanse, Tone, Moisturise Twice a Day

Cleansing is the most important first step in any skincare routine by thoroughly removing debris like dirt, oil, and pollution particles that can clog pores and cause dullness. We need to be cleansing our face morning and night by massaging in a small dollop of face cleanser lightly with fingers in circular motions, working from the inside of the face out for full coverage. At night time, double cleanse to ensure skin is thoroughly clean. To complete your skincare routine, follow with toner and then a moisturiser for your skin type.

Lack of hydration makes our skin look dull and even accentuates wrinkles. We need to be applying moisturiser morning and evening to replenish hydration. If you find that your skin is very thirsty, look for an emulsion moisturiser (blends of oil and water). This helps keep hydration in the skin’s top layers, helping it hold moisture.

Massage the Skin

When the muscles on our face are tense, they are more likely to harbour wrinkles, which is why they need to be massaged out regularly.

Stimulating the face muscles with regular massage helps to bring oxygen to that face —which is a natural form of anti-ageing skincare in itself. More blood flow to the area, it increases collagen production, which gives a healthy and natural glow to the complexion,

We can increase the effectiveness of our at-home facial treatments by incorporating a massage into our skincare routine. At night, spend a few minutes cleansing the skin, tone, apply your serum, and then moisturiser with gentle tapping motions. It will help the product absorb more easily into the skin. If you have a jade roller, gua sha tool, galvanic face tool, or anything similar, it all helps to stimulate the complexion.

Drinks Lots of Water

Given that our bodies are made up of more than 60% water, it probably comes as no surprise that water is essential to being healthy and hydrated. This does not apply only to our face but is true for the whole body.

Our skin contains approximately 30% water, which contributes to plumpness, elasticity, and resiliency. Keeping the skin hydrated can also help in slowing its ageing process as hydration helps in maintaining the skin’s elasticity, which further helps in slowing down visible signs of premature ageing and wrinkle. Proper hydration is directly related to skin cell regeneration and we need to be drinking at least 2 liters of water every day.

Wear SPF Daily

We must wear sunscreen every day of the year, come rain or shine. Ultraviolet rays that are the cause of sun damage and skin cancer are always present. The best present we can give to self is to protect our skin with SPF. Even if we avoid sunbathing, indoor UV exposure can occur from ultraviolet that penetrates through glass, which is UVA.

Get into the habit of applying sun protecting daily and apply to the entire face, neck, décolleté and hands.

My first choice here is always Ultrasun. I wear my Ultrasun SPF every day of the year.

Exfoliate & Apply a Face Mask Regularly

One of the best ways to brighten skin and boost its glow both immediately and long term is by exfoliating, When we exfoliate, we remove the skin’s outer layer of dead cells so its surface is smoother, clearer and reflects light.

Apply either a physical exfoliant, like a face scrub, two to three times per week or a chemical exfoliator, such as a face peel, once per week for sensitive or dry skin and three times maximum for other skin types,

I wrote an article recently about the Gatineau exfoliators which are suitable for all skin types. Click here for more info.

Face masks have become the foundation of any luxurious skincare routine. No matter how tired, stressed, broken-out, or dehydrated your skin may be, there’s a face mask out there to actually help it recover and return your natural glow.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep deprivation affects wound healing, collagen growth, skin hydration, and skin texture. Inflammation is also higher in the sleep-deprived, causing outbreaks of acne, eczema, psoriasis, and skin allergies. Why?

When we sleep our bodies recharge. Not only do our bodies recharge, but our skin also does as well. During sleep, we heal, restore and eliminate toxins from the skin. If sleep is compromised so is the body’s ability to carry out these essential skin functions and it is visible in our skin.

Try and establish a 7-9 hour sleep routine per night.

My Opinion

Some days are easier than others but if you really want healthy and hydrated skin, attempt as many of these suggestions as you can on a daily basis,
