What is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) is the Queen Herb in the Indian Ayurvedic system of medicine as a Rasayana (tonic). Ashwagandha is commonly known as “Indian Winter Cherry” or “Indian Ginseng”.
The translation of Ashwagandha is roughly, “the smell and strength of a horse”, alluding to its aphrodisiac properties. This plant is a Tonic and an Adaptogen. In the Middle East, it is used to help promote normal sleep patterns and encourage a healthy inflammatory response.
Ashwagandha has been used for many things over the last 3,000 years. This includes relieving stress, aiding sleep, increasing energy levels, and improving concentration.
More recently, it’s earned itself somewhat of a big reputation for coping with stress (thanks to the adaptogens) and improving thinking ability in terms of attention and concentration levels). This is where I came across Ashwagandha and why I wanted to try this ancient herb.
What are the Benefits of Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha has been attributed to embody many health benefits due to its high concentration of withanolides, which have been shown to fight inflammation in the body.
Ashwagandha may help to deliver the following health benefits:
- Reduce blood sugar levels
- Reduce tumor cells
- Lower cortisol levels
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Reduce depression
- Increase testosterone levels and significantly boosts sperm quality and fertility in men
- Increase muscle mass, reduce body fat, and increase strength in men
- Increase natural killer cell activity and decrease markers of inflammation
- Reduce the risk of heart disease by decreasing cholesterol and triglyceride levels
- Improve brain function, memory, reaction time, and the ability to perform tasks.
How to Take Ashwagandha
I am not a Doctor or a Herbal Practitioner however, from my reading, the suggestions are as follows:
- To lower cortisol (stress) levels, it’s recommended that we take 500 to 600mg a day for six to twelve weeks.
- To regulate blood sugar levels, we should take between 250mg to 1500mg split into two to three equal doses throughout the day.
My Opinion
With both my grandmothers having suffered from Dementia, this is a very poignant topic for me.
Alzheimer’s disease runs in my family and it does play on my mind especially now that I am a mum. Watching my grandmothers progressively losing their memories and the disorientation that this causes is heartbreaking to watch.
For many years now, I have researched on how to prevent Alzheimer’s and what steps I can take to try and keep my body and mind healthy. Do I know that I will definitely inherit it? Of course not but I like to think that I am proactively following preventative measures.
For example, exercising 3 to 4 times per week, eating a Mediterranean diet, and getting enough sleep are 3 important suggestions from the Harvard Medical School.
I came across ashwagandha on my search, looking to nature and what she has to offer in this area.
In a 2011 review, several studies have examined ashwagandha’s ability to slow or prevent loss of brain function in people with neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease.
As these conditions progress, parts of the brain and its connective paths become damaged, which leads to loss of memory and function. This review suggests that when mice and rats receive ashwagandha during the early disease stages, it may be able to offer protection.
The same 2011 review also describes a few promising studies that found that ashwagandha might be able to stop cell growth in certain cancers. This includes reducing lung tumors in animal studies.
The bottom line: supplementing with ashwagandha may be an easy and effective way to improve our health and quality of life today and for the future.
