The Best Winter Cleansers to Combat Dry Skin
Winter can wreak havoc on our skin and can make our skin dry, itchy, and irritated. Dryness can also make our skin look older!
To combat dry winter skin, try any of these winter cleansers to protect and maintain our skin’s natural moisture.
Why do we need a Winter Cleanser?
All skincare routines start with cleansing and it’s worth switching to a hydrating winter cleanser to cleanse without sacrificing our skin’s protective barrier.
Winter Cleansing to Combat Dry Skin: Switch to a Cleansing Balm
Cleansing balms hydrate and soothe without stripping your skin of essential moisture. Cleansing balms are impressively effective at removing even the most stubborn waterproof makeup in seconds. They remove dirt and makeup while also moisturizing. They’re cleansers with a creamy buttery consistency and should be soap-free and sulfate-free.
I have two favourite cleansings balms. The first is the Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm. The Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm is a decadent thick, golden formula that never fails to lift my mood. It’s packed with wild sea fennel and rose oils and comes with a cloth that you wet and gently slide over your complexion—a face massage and wash in one.
My other favourite cleansing balm is from Elemis. The Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm is their No.1 bestseller and transforms into 3 unique textures for the ultimate cleansing experience. It nourishes as a balm easily removes makeup as a cleansing oil and hydrates as a cleansing milk. The mineral oil-free formula also infuses Rose and Mimosa waxes with Elderberry, Starflower, and Optimega™ Oils. Its unique blend of 9 essential oils including Lavender, Chamomile, and Eucalyptus. Skin is left feeling deeply cleansed, soothed, and supremely soft. The original is a firm favourite of mine but I am in cleansing love with the Elemis Pro-Collagen Neroli Cleansing Balm.
The Elemis Neroli Cleansing Balm is a signature blend of mimosa and neroli, plus oils of borage seed, jojoba seed, bergamot, and elderberry seed, fused with orange peel wax, rose wax, shea butter, and padina pavonica and smells like heaven in a jar to invigorate the senses.
Winter Cleansing: Add a Creamy Cleanser for Oily Skins
Both the Emma Hardie and the Elemis Cleansing Balms are suitable for all skin types including oily. However, those with an oilier skin type, may prefer a lighter texture for winter cleansing. In this instance, I would suggest the DECLÉOR Neroli Bigarade Hydrating Facial Cleansing Milk.
All skin types including oily can suffer from dehydration and dryness. This light-textured lotion from Decléor, enriched with Neroli, removes make-up and impurities to leave skin exceptionally clean. This creamy cleanser is clinically proven to increase hydration levels in just 1 hour!
Winter Cleansing: Add a Yoghurt Cleanser for Sensitive Skins
The Korres, Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cream Cleanser is a nourishing cream-to-foam, soap-free cleanser that’s formulated with naturally soothing Greek yoghurt and gentle enough for the most sensitive skin.
This cream cleanser is made with real Greek yoghurt, anciently known for its soothing and strengthening properties. This sensitive skin-safe cleanser is rich in proteins, minerals, and vitamins to gently remove impurities and makeup while nurturing, leaving skin soft and supple with reduced redness.

Perricone MD High Potency Classics Nutritive Cleanser – This is a gentle gel cleanser that quickly and effectively removes excess oil, debris, and impurity build-up without stripping the skin. Softens and conditions, leaving the skin looking and feeling refreshed, never dry or tight.

Winter Cleansing: Avoid Harsh Cleansers
Be sure not to use any face washes with drying ingredients, like fragrances or additives on your skin, in favour of those with formulated chamomile or oatmeal. A gentle cleanser, like LIZ EARLE Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser, is a great option that won’t strip skin of its natural oils which are needed to protect overall moisture.
The LIZ EARLE Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser is enriched with cocoa butter to soften, smooth and moisturise, and rosemary, chamomile, and eucalyptus to tone, soothe and purify. This rich, indulgent cream deeply cleanses to instantly remove daily grime, pollutants, and make-up, even stubborn mascara, to leave skin feeling comfortable, balanced, and exceptionally clean.
Winter Cleansing: Try a Gel Face Wash
The Fresh Soy Makeup Removing Face Wash – A best-selling 3-in-1 pH-balanced gel face wash that gently melts away makeup and mascara (without the sting and without drying out the skin!), removes impurities & tones for clean, balanced skin.
It’s made with amino acid-rich soy proteins, calming cucumber extract, and balancing rosewater. It also soothes and tones sensitive skin.
Alpha-H Balancing Cleanser with Damask Rose – The Balancing Cleanser Rose is a multi-tasking cleansing cream in a non-stripping, gentle formula. A reimagining of our bestselling Balancing Cleanser made with hydrating Aloe Vera, Vitamin E, and delicately scented with aromatic Rose. Removes makeup and impurities while correcting the skin’s natural pH balance.
Top Tip
Double cleansing is never more essential than in the evening, although, it’s more than just a way to remove post-work make-up.
Throughout the day, bacteria and pollution are attracted to our skin, and need to be washed away properly. If not, they can potentially contribute to ageing, pigmentation and breakouts.
Use a facial toner! Toners prep our skin for serums and moisturiser while getting rid of excess oil and stubborn dirt or makeup leftover on our face after we wash it. There are toners for drier skin types that contain hydrating ingredients. I would recommend the DECLÉOR Neroli Bigarade Hydrating Facial Toner. This is for dehydrated skin and it a professional-strength toner that leaves skin feeling refreshed, revitalised, and rehydrated.
The active ingredients in this Decléor toner include detoxifying Green Tea Essential Water to help remove impurities and tighten pores for a clearer, more radiant complexion and fragranced with uplifting Neroli Essential Oil to help protect, repair and fight against dehydration.
The other toner I like to use (and try to always have at home) is LIZ EARLE Instant Boost™ Skin Tonic. This heavenly floral-scented, non-drying toner. Gentle and alcohol-free, it provides an instant boost of hydration to leave skin radiantly healthy-looking. Formulated with naturally active ingredients including aloe vera to hydrate, calendula, chamomile, and cucumber to soothe and refresh, plus antioxidant vitamin E. This revitalising toner is fragranced with an uplifting blend of pure essential oils, including rose-scented geranium, lavender, and sweet orange.
