Online makeup colour matching is not something new. More and more brands are offering colour matching and there are even some websites, like Findation, which specifically offer this as a service. Whichever your website preference, there are many online options to finding your perfect foundation colour online.
In an interview that I gave back to Cyprus Mail back in January, I mentioned specifically Bobbi Brown and Tarte for offering online makeup colour matching. Since then, you have been asking for more online options.
Here are my recommendations for finding your perfect foundation colour online.
Cult Beauty Match Me
The Cult Beauty Match Me asks five questions, add/upload a photo, and finishes with a list of (in theory) perfectly matched foundations across multiple makeup brands. The algorithm will match you to your perfect shade from Cult Beauty’s beauty brands including Huda Beauty, Too Faced, Charlotte Tilbury, NARS, and many more.
I have tried the tool many times, bare skin and with my makeup on. In order to get a ‘true’ match, I suggest taking a bare skin photo in natural daylight. The times I have tried the Cult Beauty Match Me tool when wearing makeup, in tends to give me results 1-to-2 tones darker.
MAC Cosmetics Virtual Try On
MAC allows us to try on 800+ shades at home with their new MAC Virtual Try-On using 3 easy steps.
- Choose a product and click “TRY IT ON” on the product page
- Enable your live camera, upload a photo from your device or choose a model.
- Scroll and click on swatches to instantly see any shade on you.
If you are still not sure, we can try their MAC Lip Colour Finder or MAC Eyeshadow Finder to compare shades and textures on different skin tones.
Again, I suggest bare skin and natural daylight to get a ‘true’ match.
Bobbi Brown Virtual Shade Matching
Get instant results with the Bobbi Brown Virtual Shade Matching Tool. According to the website, finding the perfect lipstick & eyeshadow just got easier, thanks to their new Bobbi Brown Virtual Shade Matching Tool.
Underneath each product, there is a box that says TRY IT ON. It will then ask live camera, upload a photo or choose a model to see how the product and the shade fits.
Tarte Cosmetics Foundation Matchmaker
Tarte’s 3 steps to the perfect foundation walks you through the process of finding your perfect foundation shade without uploading a photograph.
- Choose your skin type
- What kind of coverage are you looking for & what finish?
- What skin tone are you and what undertone?
Once you have completed the steps, the matchmaker suggests the right foundation texture and colour based on your answers. The foundation that it chose for me is one that I have in the correct shade.
Match My Makeup
I have only come across the Match My Makeup website recently and it claims to shade match scientifically. It is very easy to use. Rather than uploading a photograph, select a foundation that you are currently using in the correct shade and it shows you, your other personal matches.
I completed the process 3-times using 3-different foundations in the shades that I use. Some of their suggestions, I would agree with but some of them were not right for my skin tone.
Findation
The most universal foundation finder website I have found so far is Findation. It’s an independent search engine that’s not tied to any brand. Findation.com helps you find your perfect foundation colour match in all liquid, mineral, loose, and pressed foundations across a large group of brands.
Add the brands of foundation or concealer that you currently use and the colour, and it will comb through its comprehensive database of thousands of shades and hundreds of brands to produce a very long list of results. You can then send it to your email so that you have it on file.
Findation gave me approximately 100 suggestions for foundation and concealer and included brands like By Terry, Doll10 Beauty, Cle De Peau, It Cosmetics, NYX, Ciate, Estee Lauder, Jouer Cosmetics, Givenchy… and the list goes on!
My Opinion: How to Find your Perfect Foundation Colour Online
As technology advances, foundation and makeup colour matching generally will get much easier. Out of the above mentioned, I really like the Cult Beauty Match Me and I love Findation.
Findation has the extra advantage of not being tied to specific brands and to have over 100 foundation suggestions across so many brands is superb!
